In this chapter you learned what Internet Information Services is and how to set up virtual FTP and Web sites. You learned how to allow multiple FTP sites and Web sites to run on one server—and the difficulties with doing this. You also learned how to create virtual directories, which allows you to pull information from multiple locations on the server into one hierarchy.
Next, you learned about security and how to secure a Web site, including how to require different types of authentication and how to set up an SSL certificate for a Web site. SSL, short for Secure Socket Layer, is the encryption mechanism that allows normal, unencrypted Web traffic to be encrypted in both directions. This enables even a plain-text password (or basic if you prefer) to be encrypted.
Finally, you learned how to manually set up Internet Explorer to use a proxy server and how to troubleshoot problems with Internet Explorer accessing the Internet.
