Virtual Directories
In general, the idea of an FTP or Web site is a hierarchy of pages leading down to deeper directories. Most of the time those directories are all located underneath the same directory tree, but with IIS, that doesn't necessarily need to be the case.
If you have a particularly large FTP site, you could keep some files—such as the latest service packs for your programs—on one hard drive and the latest trial versions on another, different, hard drive. This would allow you to have a single FTP site that spans multiple hard drives.
Additional reasons exist for why you might not want your hard drive space to mirror the representation on the Web. Step By Step 3.9 shows you how to create a virtual directory on a Web site. The process is almost identical for creating a virtual directory for an FTP site.
STEP BY STEP 3.9: Adding a New Virtual Directory to a Web Site
From the Start menu select Settings, Control Panel.
Double-click Administrative Tools and Internet Services Manager.

Click the plus sign to the left of the computer name to display a listing of Web and FTP sites (refer to Figure 3.8).
Click the Web site to add the virtual directory to.
Right-click the computer and select New, Virtual Directory from the context menu.
Click the Next button to move past the welcome step.
Enter the alias name for the virtual directory. This is the name that will be used to reference the virtual directory from the Web browser.
Click the Next button to display the directory step.
Select a path to which the virtual directory will refer.
Click the Next button to select the permissions the directory will have.
Select the permissions that are appropriate for the directory. (Refer to Step By Step 3.7, steps 16–20, for an explanation of what each option does.)
Click the Next button; then click the Finish button to close the New Virtual Directory Wizard.
Close the Internet Information Services window.

The process forcreating a virtual FTP directory is the same except for the permissions step, in which you are presented with the option for read and write permissions—just like when you create an FTP server.
