Microsoft
Microsoft offers two virtualization certifications—Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) and Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP). Within the MCTS level, three specialty focuses are found. These include server virtualization, desktop virtualization, and configuration. Candidates can earn certification in one or all of the focus areas, with each specialty requiring the passing of a single exam. For detailed objectives of each of these exams, head over to http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/cert-virtualization.aspx#mcts.
Achieving Certified IT Professional status for virtualization requires passing three exams. First, candidates may choose to take either Microsoft’s Server Virtualization or Configuration exam. Next, the Desktop Virtualization exam is required. These three exams each correspond to an area of focus for MCTS virtualization certification; so MCTS-certified individuals will already have completed these steps of the certification path. Finally, passing the Virtualization Administrator exam is required to become MCITP certified. Linux Professional Institute
In July 2010, the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) added the “Virtualization and High Availability” elective to their LPIC-3 certification path. After completing LPIC-3 core exam, candidates can now choose the virtualization-focused elective exam to complete their certification. The exam focuses on vendor-neutral knowledge of virtualization and Cloud Computing and incorporates the skills needed on a plethora of open source products, including Red Hat Cluster, XEN, and OpenVZ, within its questions. Candidates seeking this level of LPI certification must currently hold LPIC-2 certification in good standing.
