TIA
The Telecommunications Industry Association provides the Certified in Convergent Network Technologies (CCNT) certification to test knowledge of the entry-level, fundamental concepts of convergence technology. In contrast to the CTP+ cert’s target audience of experienced convergence specialists, the CCNT program aims its content toward the needs of beginning sales and support engineers, network administrators, and product managers. This makes CCNT a good place for entry-level convergence workers to not only validate their knowledge but also start the process of preparing to achieve CTP+ certification.
Unique among most certifications, the exam process for CCNT certification consists of six online competency tests which candidates take at their convenience in an unmonitored, open-book environment. Candidates are permitted to retake each exam twice, which allows the first attempt to serve as a useful self-assessment and identifier of needed areas of study. Furthermore, once one section of the exam is passed, it can be skipped over during future retakes.
The first of CCNT’s six exams, Basic Telecommunications, uses over 100 questions to cover the fundamentals of both analog and digital telecommunications. Candidates are expected to be familiar and proficient with the topics of networks, signaling, switching, and Internet-based telecommunication services. The second exam, Basic Data Communications, extends the focus of its 70 questions to common hardware and software used in convergence networks. These include data communication devices and channels, fiber optics, and common network architectures. Computer Telephone Integration Essentials, CCNT’s third exam, assesses candidate’s familiarity with the terms and practices associated with incorporating computers and telephone systems.
The certification’s final three exams each contain fifty to sixty questions and cover the topics of Local Area Networks, Broadband Technologies, and Voice over IP, respectively. Each of the six competency exams can be taken individually, so candidates are free to study for one exam exclusively and work toward passing it before moving on to the next.
